Halva Nisyros
1 glass of orange juice, 1 tablespoon soda
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cloves, 1 deep dish roughly chopped almonds
1 handful sugar (from the kilo used for the syrup)
Ingredients for syrup:
1 kg sugar, 2 1/2 cups water, 1/2 lemon
Preparation:1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cloves, 1 deep dish roughly chopped almonds
1 handful sugar (from the kilo used for the syrup)
Ingredients for syrup:
1 kg sugar, 2 1/2 cups water, 1/2 lemon
Add the oil and water in a casserole. Once warm add the almonds to boil (only for a minute). Then place the mix in a bowl and add the juice and soda (add the soda to the juice stirring constantly until all the juice layers the basin). Then add the spices and at the end the flour. Stir with a wooden spoon; do not use your hands. It may not need all of the flour (if it takes it then prepare the syrup as the recipe says, if it takes half of the flour then prepare the syrup with 1 ½ cups of water, depending on how much flour we use we use less cups), you will know when the mixture doesn’t stick in the bowl while making the dough. Place the mixture in a round baking tin (No 40) , do not oil the tin, form it with your hands, cut into diamond shapes and place an almond (no skin) in each piece. Bake at 180 C top and bottom heat, when ready it will easily come off the pan (for 1 to 1 ½ hours). Then cut again adding the syrup (both have to be warm).
