Maps of Nisyros Island & Greece
Nisyros is a Greek volcanic island located in the Aegean Sea. It is part of the Dodecanese group of islands, situated between the islands of Kos and Tilos. It has a round shape and covers an area of 41.6 km2 with a diameter of about 8 km. Several other islets are found in the direct vicinity of Nisyros, the largest of which is Gyali. Formed from volcano eruptions, Nisyros is a place of wild beauty. According to mythology, during the period of the Gigantomachy (war of the Giants) Poseidon (the god of the sea) plucked a rock from Kos and in anger threw it at the giant Polyvotis with the intention of killing him.
