The monastery of Panagia Spiliani is built at the top of a hill northwest of Mandraki. Around the monastery retained sections of the Paleokastro wall still exist, whereas the castle is protected by the «Castle of the Knights of Rhodes» built by the Knights of St. John in the early of 14th century. The biggest part of the monastery is built in a cave. The cave is divided into two churches. The north is dedicated to the Kimisi tis Theotokou (Assumption of Mary) and the south, Agios Charalambos (Saint Charalampos). The wooden temple of the church is remarkable, and in some of its parts the original gilding is saved. Here we read the «ΑΨΚΕ-1725» (APSKE΄-1725), the date of its manufacture...

kos-asfendiou-panoramic-2Asfendiou is situated 14 kilometers south west of Kos Town at the mountainside of Mountain Dikeo. There are around 100 permanent residents and according to history the old village flourished between 1850 and 1940. Asfendiou thanks to viniculture and olive-crop has a very interesting architecture with two different
“neighbourhoods”, Evagelistria or Pera Gitonia and Asomatos. Close to the village you can find the beautiful villages of Zia, Agios Dimitrios, Zipari, Tigaki, Linopoti and Lagoudi. Places worth visiting include the church of Asomaton Taxiarchon of the 11th Century with its wooden temple and the ruins of the Early Christian Basilica of Agios Pavlos (Saint Paul) just further away from the village. By reaching the top of mountain Dikeos at a height of 840 meters you have the chance to enjoy the panoramic view of the island, take pictures and get a glimpse of the small church of Christ. Around 2 kilometers southwards at the mountainside of Dikeos there is a little village called Zia with a fantastic view attracting many visitors, tourists, Greek holiday makers and local excursionists. Once you reach Zia you have the option of buying traditional souvenirs mainly folk-art artifacts but also to enjoy local cuisine from the many Greek restaurants and traditional taverns available.
If you like churches, you may also visit the church of Agios Ioannis Theologos (St. John the Evangelist), built in the rocks, at the small village of Lagoudi (around 1 kilometer west of Asfendiou), and the small church of Prophet Elias at the top of a hill very close to Asfendiou.
